When a farmer sends a Twi voice note after pouring the first chemical, the safest response is a fast pause instruction followed by a handoff to a named extension officer. A polished answer should never delay escalation or fill missing pesticide guidance with a confident guess.
In April 1970, carbon dioxide was building inside Apollo 13’s lunar module while the spacecraft was still far from Earth. The crew had lithium hydroxide canisters that could remove it, but the command module’s square canisters did not fit the lunar module’s round openings.
NASA engineers in Houston had to turn the materials available aboard the spacecraft into a working adapter. Flight controllers then relayed the procedure to astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise. The solution used ordinary onboard materials, including plastic bags, cardboard and tape. The response mattered because it reached the people in danger while there was still time to act. Nobody solved that moment by sending the crew a beautifully written explanation of carbon dioxide chemistry.
The dangerous gap between pouring and spraying
Now picture a cocoa farmer preparing a chemical mixture in Ghana. He has poured the first product when something on the label, the crop or the planned dose makes him hesitate. His hands are occupied. The container is open. Other people may be close to the field.
He records a voice note in Asante Twi: a product name, a description of what he has already poured, and a question about what comes next.
This is a hypothetical farmer, but the product constraint is real. Releasing fluent Twi without those details could turn missing evidence into instructions that sound authoritative.
At this point, silence is unhelpful. Guessing is worse. The immediate job is to stop further action safely, preserve the details needed for review and place the question with a person who can take responsibility for the answer.

A useful handoff has to carry the situation
“Ask an expert” leaves the farmer to begin again. A stronger escalation carries the original voice note, the transcript, the selected topic and the reason the system stopped.
The first spoken response should be short enough to understand beside an open container. It should tell the farmer not to add or apply more chemical until the question is reviewed. It should avoid supplying a dose, re-entry interval or pre-harvest interval that has not been approved.
Then the workflow should send the case to the cocoa-sector partner’s named extension officer. That ownership matters. Context also matters. A useful escalation preserves what the farmer said instead of forcing a second account after the urgency has faded. Speed must be measured alongside safety
A fast answer has little value if it is unsafe. A safe workflow also fails if its first useful instruction arrives after the farmer has finished mixing.
AgriVoice therefore needs two clocks. The automated path should return a reviewed answer or correct escalation in under eight seconds at the pilot median, excluding the later human response. The human queue should have a named owner and a median response below one working day.
Those measures serve different moments. The first protects the farmer during the immediate pause. The second determines whether the pause becomes informed action or an unresolved delay.
The pilot also sets a harder boundary: zero unsafe pesticide answers. Any unreviewed or unsafe instruction reaching a farmer triggers a stop or redesign decision. Success means answering correctly or escalating correctly, not maximizing the number of questions answered automatically.
Build the relay before inviting farmers
Apollo 13’s improvised carbon dioxide adapter worked because Houston could identify the immediate danger, develop a procedure around the materials available and relay it to the crew. The handoff itself was part of the solution.
AgriVoice needs that relay tested before farmer exposure. Staff should send a realistic Twi voice note that mentions an uncertain chemical question after mixing has begun. The system should recognize enough of the message to detect risk, speak a clear pause instruction, preserve the recording under the approved consent and retention rules, and deliver the case to the named extension officer.
The officer should receive enough context to respond without reconstructing the situation from scratch. Staff should then confirm that the farmer receives the reviewed follow-up and that unresolved cases remain visible in the queue.
Run that rehearsal with the three withheld chemical blocks still withheld. The correct result is escalation. Once a Ghanaian agronomist verifies dosage, re-entry and pre-harvest details, the same test can prove that approved guidance is spoken accurately.
When the voice note arrives mid-mix, elegance can wait. The farmer needs one safe instruction now, followed by a human response that arrives with the original question intact.
