The safest answer at the last reversible moment is an honest pause: do not recommend a chemical until the damaged cocoa pod and the treatment instructions have been reviewed by someone qualified. An open container creates pressure to act, but uncertainty about the diagnosis, dosage, re-entry period, or pre-harvest interval is a reason to stop and escalate.

In 1854, physician John Snow faced a similarly consequential gap between what people commonly believed and what the evidence could support. Cholera was spreading through Soho in London. The dominant explanation blamed foul air, yet Snow studied where deaths occurred and traced the outbreak toward the public water pump on Broad Street.

The outcome was still uncertain when he presented his evidence to local officials. Snow could not see the pathogen in the water with the tools available to him. He had a pattern, a suspected source, and people continuing to face danger. The pump handle was removed.

Snow later documented the investigation in the second edition of On the Mode of Communication of Cholera, published in 1855. Removing the handle became an enduring example of acting cautiously when evidence points to a preventable risk, even before every part of the diagnosis is settled.

A damaged pod creates pressure to spray

Now place a cocoa farmer beside a damaged pod. The container is already open. Time and money have already been spent obtaining the chemical. Waiting can feel like waste, especially when disease may spread and the next visit from an extension officer is uncertain.

That pressure does not identify the problem.

Pod damage can look convincing without revealing enough to support a particular treatment. Even if the product choice is appropriate, safe use still depends on verified instructions. How much should be applied? How should it be mixed? How long should a person wait before entering the treated area? How close is harvest, and what pre-harvest interval applies?

A fluent voice answer can make missing facts sound settled. That is precisely where confidence becomes dangerous.

AgriVoice is being prepared for Asante-Twi-speaking cocoa farmers, but its language model does not write agronomy advice. It selects from content blocks that people have already reviewed. Useful uncertainty needs a next step

“Ask an expert” is too thin when a farmer is standing in the field with a decision to make. A useful answer should preserve the farmer’s options while making the uncertainty clear.

The response should say that the available information does not support choosing or dosing the chemical. It should advise the farmer to hold off on spraying, avoid mixing products on a guess, keep people away from any area already treated, and retain the product label or container for review. Then it should send the question to the named extension officer responsible for escalations.

That last step matters. Uncertainty without ownership becomes a dead end.

The planned AgriVoice pilot therefore requires a cocoa-sector partner to name the extension officer who receives unresolved questions. The operating target is a median response within one working day. If nobody owns the queue, the pilot is not ready for farmer exposure.

The same principle applies when the product cannot distinguish between a common disease question, an ambiguous description, and an unsafe request. The system should select a reviewed answer only when the evidence supports it. Otherwise, it should escalate. Why AgriVoice told a farmer to hold off on spraying explores that boundary in practice.

Safety must be measured in the field

A controlled demo can show that speech enters the system and a Twi response comes back. It cannot prove that farmers will be understood correctly in real fields, that the chosen content matches their questions, or that escalation works when the answer is missing.

That is why Neuralis is preparing a two-week pilot with 20 to 50 farmers rather than presenting AgriVoice as ready for broad release. Before exposure, at least 20 real farmer questions must be recorded and transcribed for speech-recognition measurement. The translated content must be reviewed by a farming-aware Asante Twi speaker. A Ghanaian agronomist must resolve or continue withholding the chemical blocks.

The safety threshold is direct: zero unsafe pesticide answers. Any unreviewed or unsafe instruction reaching a farmer triggers a stop or redesign decision. Successful escalation counts as a successful outcome because recognizing the limit of the available evidence is part of answering safely.

John Snow’s investigation did not depend on pretending he knew more than the evidence showed. He identified a credible risk, made a reversible intervention, and kept investigating. Beside a damaged cocoa pod, the corresponding move is smaller but structurally similar: leave the container open if necessary, keep the chemical unused, and route the question to the person qualified to close the diagnosis.
