What Should You Do When Harvest Is Friday but Pesticide Timing Is Unclear?

When harvest is days away and a farmer asks whether to spray, the safe answer is reviewed, product-specific guidance or a prompt escalation to a qualified person. Missing dosage, re-entry, or pre-harvest facts must stop a recommendation because a confident guess can put people, cocoa, and the harvest at risk.

Picture the morning: harvest is Friday, the leaves look wrong, and a bottle is already in hand. A farmer may have one narrow window to act before rain, labour, or the harvest schedule changes. “Can I spray this today?” sounds like a simple question. It is not simple when the product concentration is unclear, the dose has not been reviewed, or nobody can confirm how long people must stay out of the field afterward.

A fast answer can create a lasting problem

Spraying advice carries consequences beyond the moment of application. The wrong amount can waste money or damage a crop. An unknown re-entry interval can expose the person who sprays, family members, or workers returning to harvest. An unclear pre-harvest interval can create another decision when cocoa is ready to pick.

That is why AgriVoice is designed to select from reviewed guidance rather than generate agronomy advice from scratch. The system can help a farmer reach a relevant, approved answer in Asante Twi. It also has to recognize when the approved content does not cover the question safely.

Three AgriVoice chemical blocks remain held because the necessary dosage, re-entry, and pre-harvest information has not yet been verified by a Ghanaian agronomist. In that situation, refusal is useful. The farmer needs a person who can inspect the bottle, confirm the product, and give accountable advice. A spoken answer that fills the gap with plausible words would be worse than silence.

What John Snow did when certainty was unavailable

In London in 1854, cholera deaths clustered around the Broad Street water pump in Soho. Dr. John Snow had evidence that the pump was linked to the outbreak, but he did not have the kind of laboratory proof people would expect today. The decision still had to be made while people were dying.

Snow presented his findings to the local Board of Guardians, which removed the pump handle. His investigation, including the map of deaths around the pump, was later documented in his 1855 book, On the Mode of Communication of Cholera.

The important part of this story is the boundary Snow drew. He did not treat uncertainty as permission to do nothing, and he did not turn incomplete evidence into a broader claim than the evidence could support. He identified a specific risk, took a reversible protective action, and kept investigating.

A cocoa farmer facing an unclear pesticide label has a different problem, with far smaller stakes and the same decision shape: incomplete information should narrow the action, not widen it. If the system cannot safely say “spray this amount today and harvest on Friday,” it should say what it knows, explain what is missing, and route the question to someone responsible for the answer.

Reviewed blocks keep the system inside its evidence

AgriVoice’s language model selects reviewed content blocks. It does not author pesticide instructions. That design matters because fluent language can hide uncertainty. A response may sound helpful in Twi while silently substituting a product, a dose, or a timing rule that nobody has approved.

The product already treats missing chemical guidance as a reason to escalate. The pilot requires an identified extension officer to receive those escalations, and it measures whether questions are answered or correctly escalated. A correct escalation counts as a successful outcome. A confident wrong answer does not.

This also protects the translator and the voice system from being asked to carry authority they do not have. Translating an approved farming instruction into spoken Asante Twi is valuable work. Translating an unverified instruction does not make it safe. The same applies when a farmer code-switches, sends a poor-quality voice note, or names a pesticide unclearly.

The practical rule is plain: identify the product, confirm the label and concentration, use reviewed guidance only when it matches, and send uncertain cases to the named human owner. The right refusal preserves the next decision

A refusal should never leave a farmer with a dead end. It should explain the missing fact in clear language and make the next step visible: keep the bottle and label available, do not spray until the product and timing are confirmed, and contact the extension officer through the escalation path.

That is the operational promise AgriVoice still has to prove in its two-week farmer pilot. It must deliver reviewed answers that people understand, escalate uncertainty quickly, and avoid unsafe pesticide advice entirely. Its success will depend on translated content, agronomist review, working WhatsApp delivery, real farmer voice testing, and a partner who owns follow-up.

Snow’s pump handle is remembered because it limited harm while the evidence was still incomplete. AgriVoice needs the same discipline in a cocoa field: preserve the useful guidance, hold back the unsafe guess, and make sure the unresolved question reaches someone who can answer it responsibly.
