What Should You Do When a Pesticide Name Leaves the Dose Unclear?

A recognized pesticide trade name does not provide a safe dose. A safe instruction requires the exact formulation and concentration, the crop stage, and label evidence for that bottle.

In 1937, S. E. Massengill Company sold Elixir Sulfanilamide in the United States. Sulfanilamide itself was already a recognised medicine, but the product’s liquid formulation used diethylene glycol. Reports of deaths followed, and the disaster became part of the record behind the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The name on the bottle did not establish that the full product was safe. The formulation mattered.

A trade name leaves the critical details unanswered

A farmer may send AgriVoice a voice message in Asante Twi and clearly name a pesticide product. That recognition can help an extension officer begin the conversation. It cannot safely end it.

The same trade name can leave essential questions open: Which formulation is this? What is the active ingredient concentration? Is the label intended for cocoa? What problem is the farmer treating? What stage is the cocoa crop at? What does that specific label say about use, protective measures, re-entry, and pre-harvest intervals?

Those details change the instruction. A product name alone cannot fill them in.

This is especially important in a voice workflow. Audio can capture a familiar-sounding name while missing a concentration, a formulation word, or a detail on a worn label. A system that sounds confident after hearing only the name can turn incomplete evidence into authoritative-sounding advice.

The current evidence on unscripted African speech points to the same practical problem. Specialized vocabulary, numbers, and named entities remain difficult under realistic noise, including in agriculture. A model can hear enough to suggest a possible match while still missing the detail that determines whether advice is safe.

Why AgriVoice holds chemical answers back

AgriVoice is being prepared for a limited cocoa-farmer pilot, not a public scale launch. Its reasoning layer selects reviewed content blocks. It does not create agronomy instructions from scratch.

That boundary matters most for pesticide questions. Three chemical blocks remain withheld because verified dosage, re-entry, and pre-harvest information are missing. Refusing to provide an instruction in that situation is the intended safety behaviour.

A familiar product name can create pressure to answer anyway. The farmer may be standing in a cocoa farm with a bottle already in hand. The question may sound simple: “How much should I use?” But the safe next step is often to establish what is actually in that bottle and what the label permits.

That is why the pilot requires a Ghanaian agronomist to review the held chemical content before it reaches farmers. It also requires a named extension officer who can receive escalations. When the evidence is incomplete, a human with the right context has to take over.

The label is part of the answer

For a pesticide question, the label is not background paperwork. It is evidence that connects the product in a farmer’s hand to a safe instruction.

A useful escalation should ask for the information that resolves the uncertainty: a clear photo of the front and back label where possible, the formulation and concentration, the cocoa problem being treated, and the crop context. If a label is torn, unreadable, or unavailable, the extension officer needs to know that too. Missing evidence should narrow the response, not encourage a guess.

This also means translation must be handled carefully. AgriVoice cannot rely on machine translation for spoken, authoritative cocoa advice. Early testing showed that a domain noun could be silently replaced with the wrong meaning. The project is therefore waiting for farming-aware Asante Twi translation and review of the approved blocks before farmer exposure.

The right answer may be an escalation rather than a dosage. That outcome still helps the farmer because it prevents a confident instruction from being built on an uncertain product match.

Build the workflow around uncertainty

The 1937 Elixir Sulfanilamide case remains a sharp reminder that a known name can hide a consequential formulation detail. The product’s name did not describe the solvent, and the solvent changed the outcome.

AgriVoice applies the same discipline at a smaller, local scale. A pesticide name can be recognised. It can be matched to reviewed content only when the evidence supports that match. When the bottle, label, formulation, crop stage, or safety interval remains unclear, the workflow should send the case to the named extension officer.

That is the operational promise worth testing in the two-week pilot: farmers receive a reviewed answer when the facts are sufficient, and a clear route to a human when they are not. A bottle should remain unopened for spraying guidance until the person answering can identify what the label actually authorises.
