A farmer should not enter a recently sprayed cocoa field until the product label and safe re-entry guidance have been confirmed. In AgriVoice’s planned pilot workflow, an uncertain Twi voice question is sent to a named extension officer instead of receiving guessed pesticide advice.
At 6:12 a.m., Kwaku stands at the edge of his cocoa plot outside Kumasi with one boot already pressing into wet leaf litter. His cutlass is in his right hand. The sprayer his cousin used yesterday leans against a tree behind him, its label rubbed pale by rain and use.
He has come to clear weeds before the heat builds. The field looks ordinary: low cocoa branches, a torn fertilizer sack caught on a stump, droplets still hanging on the grass. But he cannot remember when the spraying finished, and he does not know whether the product requires more time before anyone walks back in.
That uncertainty carries a real cost. If he enters too soon, he could expose himself to a chemical residue he cannot identify from the bottle. If he stays out without asking, weeds and work wait, and he loses a morning he had already set aside.
Kwaku records a short question in Asante Twi on WhatsApp: “Can I go into the cocoa farm now? It was sprayed yesterday.”
A pesticide question needs a safe path, not a fast guess
A useful voice service must know the boundary between an answer it can safely give and one it must pass to a person. Pesticide advice crosses that boundary when the product, dose, re-entry interval, pre-harvest interval, or spray timing is unclear.
AgriVoice is designed around reviewed cocoa guidance. The language model selects a reviewed content block; it does not write agronomy advice from scratch. For chemical questions, mandatory safety content remains attached. Where the approved guidance does not match the farmer’s question with enough confidence, the system escalates.
That distinction matters at the field edge. A fluent answer that assumes the formulation, concentration, or time since spraying could sound convincing while putting Kwaku in harm’s way. The safer response is plain: do not enter yet. Keep people away from the sprayed area until the right person confirms the product instructions.
This is the problem behind pesticide label guidance when Kojo’s formulation required extension review. The label is evidence, but a damaged or incomplete label cannot become permission to guess.
The escalation must reach one accountable person
In the planned pilot, a cocoa-sector partner recruits the farmers and names the extension officer who owns escalations. For Kwaku’s question, that person is Ama Mensah, the assigned extension officer in this illustrative scenario.
AgriVoice can send Ama the farmer’s question, the relevant context, and a clear reason for escalation: recently sprayed field, product details uncertain, re-entry guidance needed. The handoff must work as an operation, not as a hopeful notification sitting in an unattended queue.
Ama calls Kwaku before he steps past the field edge. She asks him to read what remains of the label and to confirm when spraying ended. Until she can verify the product guidance, she tells him to stay out and keep anyone else away from the plot.
The uncertainty remains for a beat because it should. There may be no safe answer from the information available that morning. A system that treats every question as something to answer immediately creates pressure to fill gaps with confident language.
The planned pilot measures this directly. A successful answer includes a correctly handled escalation. The extension officer needs a named responsibility, and the target response time is less than one working day. If there is no accountable person or the queue stays unresolved, the workflow has failed a safety gate.
Twi voice makes the first question easier to ask
Kwaku’s immediate problem is not a lack of willingness to seek advice. He is standing at the field edge with a question that needs to be asked in the language he uses every day.
AgriVoice is being prepared for Asante-Twi-speaking cocoa farmers. A farmer can speak a question rather than compose formal written text, and the service can return reviewed guidance as speech. The voice path still has to earn trust in the field: farmer speech must be tested, translations must be reviewed by a farming-aware Twi translator, and the existing voice must be understood well enough for the pilot.
Those gates are part of the point. A voice response that is hard to understand can create the same danger as an incorrect one. Before any farmer pilot, the team needs real farmer questions, consent and deletion behavior tested, reviewed Twi content, a working WhatsApp conversation, and a staff safety rehearsal with a functioning escalation path.
CHED’s coordination work across cocoa regions has emphasized technology, monitoring, reporting, and consistent communication. A field-level escalation workflow only helps if those same responsibilities remain visible from the farmer’s message to the person expected to act.
The morning after should feel different
The next morning, Kwaku returns with clearer instructions from Ama and a better understanding of what to check before entering after a spray. His cutlass is still there. The field is still waiting. The difference is that he does not have to decide whether a half-readable bottle and a vague memory are enough to risk his health.
That is the standard AgriVoice needs to meet during a two-week pilot with 20 to 50 farmers. It must answer reviewed questions safely, escalate uncertain ones correctly, and show that farmers understand what they hear. One unsafe pesticide instruction reaching a farmer is a stop signal.
For farmers, the practical habit is simple: when a spray product, concentration, or re-entry time is unclear, pause at the field edge and ask a qualified extension contact before going in. For the service, the obligation is harder: make that pause lead somewhere.
