Kojo’s pesticide dose is unverified. The sprayer must stay unused.

When a farmer asks for pesticide dosage after beginning a mix, AgriVoice should stop rather than supply an unverified instruction. The safe next step is to preserve the question, keep the chemical out of use, and send it to the named extension officer for a reviewed answer.

At the edge of a cocoa plot outside Kumasi, Kojo has one hand on a sprayer and the other around a partly opened bottle. It is late afternoon. Water already sits in the mixing container, and the first measure of chemical has gone in. His phone plays a Twi voice reply, but the question he needs answered is the one the system cannot safely complete: how much product belongs in this amount of water?

The answer matters before the next pour. Too little may leave the crop untreated. Too much could expose Kojo, anyone entering the plot, and the cocoa itself to harm. A confident guess could turn a routine spray into the mistake that follows the family home.

AgriVoice is built to treat that silence as a safety decision. Its language model selects from reviewed advice blocks; it does not invent agronomy instructions. When dosage, re-entry timing, pre-harvest intervals, or product-specific guidance has not been verified, the workflow must escalate to a person with responsibility for the answer.

The dangerous moment is often after preparation has begun

The hardest safety questions rarely arrive while someone is calmly planning their week. They arrive with a bottle open, rain clouds moving in, a worker waiting, or a crop problem that feels urgent.

That timing changes what useful support looks like. A generic warning to “follow the label” may be correct, yet it leaves a farmer holding an unfinished mix and a question in the language they use every day. A fluent-sounding answer with the wrong dose is worse. It removes doubt at exactly the point where doubt should slow the process down.

A Twi question needs a named human response

Kojo speaks his question into the phone in Asante Twi. The system can capture the request, identify that it needs an answer outside its approved content, and route the escalation. It cannot replace the agronomist who confirms the product guidance.

That distinction matters because local-language access and technical accountability have to work together. A Ghanaian study has found that farmers draw agricultural information from radio, calls, SMS, WhatsApp, social media, and video, while language, literacy, connectivity, income, and device barriers remain real. Voice can make the first step easier. It does not make uncertain chemical advice safe.

The pilot therefore requires a cocoa-sector partner to own recruitment and name the extension officer who receives escalations. “Ask an expert” is too vague when a farmer has already started mixing. There needs to be a person, a route, and a response-time commitment.

For Kojo, the turn comes when the phone gives him a plain instruction: stop adding product, do not spray yet, and wait for the extension response. His unfinished mixture remains a problem, but it is no longer an invisible problem handed to an automated reply. Someone accountable now has the exact question and the context needed to answer it.

Safety depends on what happens after the escalation

An escalation button alone does not protect anyone. The pilot has to test whether the extension path actually closes the loop: who receives the request, how quickly they respond during a working day, whether the farmer understands the spoken reply, and whether the final guidance is recorded as reviewed content for future use.

That is a different standard from measuring whether a voice assistant can produce an immediate answer. AgriVoice’s scorecard treats a correctly escalated question as a successful outcome, while a confident wrong answer is a redesign signal. For pesticide questions, the target is zero unsafe instructions reaching a farmer.

The system also needs to say what it knows without sounding evasive. It can explain that the dosage is unverified, tell the farmer to pause, and make the handoff visible. It should not disguise a refusal inside technical language or pretend that a general safety sentence answers a product-specific question.

The morning after should be a safer decision

In this illustrative scene, Kojo does not leave the plot with a neat automated answer. He leaves the sprayer unused until the extension officer can give guidance that matches the product and situation. The next morning, the bottle is still there, but the decision is no longer a guess made under pressure.

That is the standard worth building toward. Before farmers encounter AgriVoice, the pilot needs reviewed Twi content, an agronomist’s clearance for held chemical guidance, a functioning WhatsApp route, and a named escalation owner. Then the two-week farmer pilot can measure whether the handoff works when it counts.

A voice workflow earns trust by knowing where its authority ends. For a dosage question mid-mix, stopping is part of the answer.
