Cocoa Pesticide Advice: Why AgriVoice Keeps the Bottle Closed

A WhatsApp group recommendation can point a cocoa farmer toward a useful next step, but it cannot verify a pesticide dosage or tell a family when it is safe to enter a sprayed field again. When those details are missing, AgriVoice is designed to withhold chemical instructions and send the question to a named extension officer instead.

At 6:20 on a damp morning, Kojo stood beside his cocoa trees with his phone in one hand and a sprayer bottle in the other. The group message was short: “Spray today before it spreads.” Two people had added thumbs-up reactions. Someone named a product. No one said how much to mix into the tank, how long to wait before walking back among the trees, or whether harvesting fruit later that week changed the advice.

Kojo had spotted marks on several pods the day before. His oldest child usually helped carry pods from the farm after school. If he sprayed too little, the problem could keep moving. If he used the wrong amount, or sent someone into the field too soon, the bad ending was bigger than lost cocoa. The bottle stayed closed, but the pressure did not.

A survey of 390 cocoa farmers found that some had acted on false information about pruning, prices, fertiliser, and pest control. That is why a confident message in a group deserves a pause. Confidence travels quickly. Verified guidance takes work.

A recommendation is not a complete instruction

“Spray today” may be the beginning of a conversation. It is not enough to safely carry out a pesticide decision.

For chemical guidance, the missing details matter: the exact product, the crop problem, the dosage, the protective steps, the re-entry interval, and the pre-harvest interval where relevant. A group member may have used the same product on a different crop, at a different concentration, or for a different disease. Their message can sound certain while leaving out the part that keeps people safe.

AgriVoice is being prepared for a small pilot with Asante-Twi-speaking cocoa farmers through a cocoa-sector partner. Its role is deliberately narrow. It can select from reviewed advice blocks and speak the response in Twi. It does not invent agronomy advice. If the answer is uncertain or a chemical block lacks expert approval, the safe path is escalation to a person.

That boundary matters because fluent language can create false confidence. A response that sounds natural in Twi still needs verified content behind it.

The moment the bottle stays closed

In the illustrative scene, Kojo sends a voice question in Twi. He describes the pod marks, repeats the product name from the WhatsApp group, and asks how much to put in his sprayer.

AgriVoice can recognize the question as a pesticide request. But the reviewed content for that product does not include a verified dosage, re-entry interval, or pre-harvest interval. The system does not fill those gaps with a plausible answer. It tells Kojo that the chemical instruction needs confirmation and routes the question to the extension officer responsible for escalations.

That is the turn in the story. The app does not make the uncertainty disappear. It makes the uncertainty visible while there is still time to act safely.

Kojo has not solved the pod problem by breakfast. He has something more useful than a confident guess: a clear reason to wait, a record of what needs checking, and a path to a person who can verify the answer. His child does not enter a newly sprayed field on the strength of a group message.

Safety depends on the handoff after the warning

A refusal alone can leave a farmer stranded. “We cannot answer that” only helps if the next step is clear and owned by someone.

That is why the AgriVoice pilot has gates before farmer exposure. A cocoa-sector partner must own recruitment and name the extension officer who receives escalations. The chemical content must be reviewed by a Ghanaian agronomist, including dosage, re-entry, and pre-harvest intervals. Staff must test the whole path, from a voice question to a safe answer or working escalation.

The pilot also has a hard safety measure: zero unsafe pesticide answers. One unreviewed or unsafe instruction reaching a farmer is a stop signal, not a minor bug to explain away later.

This approach may feel slower than replying immediately in a WhatsApp group. Yet the delay has a purpose. It prevents the system from sounding authoritative where it lacks the facts needed to be safe.

What farmers and partners can do before spraying

The practical habit is simple: treat a forwarded chemical recommendation as a prompt to verify, not as an instruction to follow.

Before opening a pesticide bottle, write down or record the product name, the cocoa problem you see, the amount suggested, and when anyone plans to re-enter the field or harvest. If any of those answers are missing, keep the bottle closed and ask an extension professional or qualified agronomist.

Partners building farmer support channels can make this easier by naming who owns urgent questions, setting an expected response path, and reviewing the words farmers will hear before a message is sent. Local-language voice support earns trust when it knows where its certainty ends.

Later that morning, Kojo puts the sprayer back under cover. His phone still has the group’s message on the screen. Beside it is the escalation record, waiting for the one detail the group never supplied.
