When a pesticide label is unreadable, AgriVoice should not reconstruct a dosage from memory, a similar product name, or last season’s advice. The safe response is to hold the chemical guidance and hand the question to the named extension officer with the details that remain visible.
The part of the label that is missing matters most
Picture a cocoa farmer at the edge of a plot in Ashanti. The bag has been folded, carried, and exposed to rain. Its bottom label has torn away. The product name may still be partly visible, but the dosage, re-entry interval, pre-harvest interval, or formulation details may be gone.
That creates a dangerous gap. A familiar brand name does not prove the concentration. A product sold in a similar package may carry different instructions. A voice assistant that fills in the missing lines can sound certain while giving advice that does not belong to that exact product.
AgriVoice is being prepared for cocoa farmers who ask questions in Asante Twi. For pesticide questions, its role has a firm boundary: it can select reviewed guidance, including required safety information, but it does not write agronomy advice. When the evidence needed for a safe answer is missing, the question must move to a person who can assess it.
Three chemical content blocks are currently held because key dosage, re-entry, and pre-harvest details have not been verified by a Ghanaian agronomist. Holding them back is deliberate. A silent gap is easier to fix than an authoritative wrong instruction spoken aloud.
Apollo 13 solved a precise problem with verified materials
In 1970, Apollo 13 faced a carbon dioxide problem after an explosion damaged the spacecraft on the way to the Moon. The lunar module had lithium hydroxide canisters that could remove carbon dioxide, but the command module’s square canisters did not fit the lunar module’s round intake.
NASA engineers in Houston worked from the actual materials available aboard the spacecraft. The resulting adapter used items including a flight plan cover, plastic bags, tape, and tubing. The crew then assembled it using the verified procedure. The outcome was uncertain while the problem was unfolding, and the solution had to fit the equipment in that spacecraft, with those materials, under those constraints.

The lesson is not that every missing instruction can be improvised. It is the opposite. The Houston team could act because they knew the exact equipment, the available materials, and the technical requirement. They did not guess at a connection and hope it worked.
A torn pesticide label has the same demand for discipline. If the formulation, dose, or interval cannot be confirmed, there is no safe equivalent to “close enough.”
A named handoff turns uncertainty into work
A safe escalation should give the extension officer something useful to act on. The farmer or field staff member can capture the visible product name, a photo of the remaining label, the crop problem being treated, the farm stage, and the question the farmer asked. The officer can then confirm the product details or advise that spraying must wait.

The farmer still receives a clear response. The answer can say that the dosage cannot be safely confirmed from the available label, that spraying should wait, and that the question has been passed to the extension officer. That is practical guidance, even before the final chemical instruction is available.

Safety depends on what can be proved
The temptation to complete an answer is strong. A farmer has a bag, a sprayer, and a problem in the field. The assistant has a partial product name and a request in Twi. A fluent answer may feel more helpful than a pause.
But fluency does not turn partial evidence into verified evidence. Apollo 13’s adapter worked because its makers respected the physical facts in front of them. AgriVoice should respect the same principle with pesticide guidance: use reviewed content when it matches the evidence, escalate when it does not, and never manufacture the missing instruction.
