A health programme can strengthen a cocoa-farming household while leaving a second, dangerous gap untouched: timely farm guidance in a language people can understand. Closing that gap requires a separate delivery path for reviewed advice, with a named person ready when the answer is uncertain.

In April 1970, Apollo 13’s crew faced rising carbon dioxide inside the spacecraft. The command module’s square lithium-hydroxide canisters could not fit the lunar module’s round openings. The equipment needed to keep James Lovell, John Swigert and Fred Haise alive was aboard, but its shape did not match the system available to use it.

Engineers at Mission Control in Houston developed an adapter using materials already inside the spacecraft. They then had to explain the procedure clearly enough for the crew to reproduce it in flight. NASA documents the emergency and the improvised device often called the “mailbox” in its Apollo 13 historical accounts.

The lesson reaches beyond spacecraft engineering. Useful knowledge does not help merely because it exists somewhere. It has to reach the person at risk, through a channel they can use, in a form that fits the decision in front of them.

One household can face two different access gaps

A health programme reaching cocoa-farming households in Ghana is meaningful progress. It can bring services, information or referrals closer to people whose location, income or daily work may make access difficult.

Farm decisions create a different route to risk.

A farmer may need to identify a cocoa problem, decide whether to spray, understand a re-entry interval or know when a question requires an extension officer. The answer may exist in a manual, an office or an expert’s experience. Yet access can still depend on travelling, reading English or finding the right person before the decision becomes urgent.

That mismatch resembles Apollo 13’s canisters. The resource exists, but it does not fit the opening available at the moment of need.

A household should not have to turn general health access into a substitute for agricultural advice. Health workers should not be expected to answer agronomy questions outside their role. The stronger response is to connect the programmes carefully, while keeping their responsibilities clear.

Local-language voice can shorten the distance to reviewed advice

For an Asante-Twi-speaking cocoa farmer, voice can remove two practical barriers at once. The farmer can ask a question without typing it and hear the response without reading an English document.

That convenience only matters when the answer itself is controlled. Neuralis is preparing AgriVoice around reviewed cocoa guidance rather than allowing a language model to compose agronomy advice. The system selects approved content blocks. Missing, ambiguous or uncertain questions go to a person.

This boundary is especially important for pesticide guidance. A fluent answer can still be unsafe if dosage, re-entry or pre-harvest information has not been verified. AgriVoice currently withholds chemical blocks that lack those details. Refusal is the correct response until a Ghanaian agronomist clears them.

Local language also needs human review. Machine translation once changed the Twi word for cocoa into “chicken.” That kind of error can sound confident when spoken aloud. Before farmers hear AgriVoice guidance, its approved blocks need spoken Asante Twi reviewed by someone who understands farming vocabulary.

Escalation needs an owner, not an empty queue

Voice access cannot replace field knowledge in every case. Some questions depend on symptoms, location, product labels or conditions that cannot be verified from a recording. Those questions need escalation.

An escalation path becomes useful only when a named extension officer owns it and responds within an agreed period. Sending a question into an unattended queue merely hides the access problem behind software. This is why Neuralis plans to test AgriVoice through a cocoa-sector partner with a named extension officer. The proposed pilot is deliberately small: 20 to 50 farmers over two weeks. It will measure whether questions are answered or correctly escalated, whether farmers understand the voice, whether anyone returns in the second week and whether human follow-up happens fast enough to remain useful.

The safety threshold is simpler: no unreviewed or unsafe pesticide instruction should reach a farmer.

Build the adapter before expanding the programme

Institutions already serving cocoa-farming households can begin by mapping the unanswered farm questions they encounter. Which questions recur? Which require a farm visit? Which can be answered from reviewed material? Who accepts the cases that cannot?

Then test the complete route with real speech: farmer question, transcription, approved answer or escalation, spoken response and human follow-up. Measure comprehension and safe handling before counting reach.

Apollo 13’s engineers did more than locate the right material. They converted it into instructions that worked with the equipment and constraints the crew actually had. Cocoa institutions face a quieter version of the same design problem. The guidance must fit the farmer’s language, channel and immediate decision, while preserving a clear route to a qualified person when voice alone cannot carry the answer.
