Pesticide questions on local radio should lead to a verified answer or a clear handoff to an agronomist. When the dose, product, re-entry interval, or harvest timing is uncertain, silence for a moment is safer than confident instructions that could harm a farmer or crop.
At 5:54 a.m., six minutes before the red light at a cooperative radio studio in Kumasi, Kojo’s phone buzzed against the paper rundown beside his microphone. He hosts the farming slot twice a week and keeps a thermos of milky tea under the desk, always too sweet by the final song.
The voice note was from a cocoa farmer. The speaker named a pesticide, described damaged pods, and asked how much to mix before spraying that morning. Kojo replayed the message once, then again. He had a microphone, a waiting audience, and no verified dosage in front of him.
The bad ending was already clear. If he filled the gap with advice that sounded plausible, a farmer could mix the wrong concentration, enter a sprayed field too soon, or spray close to harvest without knowing the required interval. If he said nothing, his first caller of the day would hear dead air where help was meant to be.
The pressure behind a simple voice note
Radio can cross literacy and distance in a way printed guidance cannot. That is why farmer-led radio programmes matter, especially as Ghanaian cooperatives build on training that reached 46 people from 14 cocoa cooperatives and demand continues to exceed available places.
But a broadcast voice gives advice extra weight. A farmer may hear one sentence while walking toward a farm, holding a sprayer, or deciding whether to spend scarce money on an input. “Use this amount” can become action before anyone has time to correct it.
Pesticide questions carry details that cannot be safely guessed. Product names can be confused. Bottle concentrations can differ. A torn label can hide the instruction that matters most. Re-entry and pre-harvest intervals are safety information, not optional footnotes.
That is why a useful local-language voice service needs a safe boundary. It can recognize a question, select reviewed information, and speak it back in familiar language. When the information is missing or uncertain, it must route the person to a named human who can verify the answer.
A pause can protect the person asking
Kojo looked at the clock. Four minutes.
He could have softened the uncertainty with broad advice: follow the label, wear protection, ask an extension officer. Those are sensible words, yet they did not answer the farmer’s immediate question. He also knew that adding a dose from memory would turn a careful warning into a dangerous instruction.
So he changed the shape of the segment.
He played the voice note without identifying the sender, then said the question needed product-specific review before anyone mixed or sprayed anything. He asked listeners to keep the bottle closed, keep people out of the area if spraying had already happened, and contact the cooperative’s extension contact with the product name and label details.
The red light came on. There was no dead air.
A safe escalation gives the host something concrete to say: what cannot yet be confirmed, what the farmer should avoid doing, and who owns the next response. It treats uncertainty as information. That matters more than sounding complete.

Reviewed answers need an accountable route
The hard part is rarely finding words. The hard part is making sure those words are approved for the exact question being asked.

By the end of the programme, Kojo had recorded the product name and promised the caller a follow-up through the cooperative contact. The next farming slot had a different rhythm. He could answer the questions covered by reviewed material, then plainly mark the one that needed expert confirmation.
That is a better radio habit and a better voice-AI habit: distinguish between guidance that has been checked and a question that needs a person.
