A farmer who finds unfamiliar marks on cocoa pods should avoid guessing, especially with chemicals. The safest next step is to describe the damage in the language they speak best, then receive reviewed guidance or a clear handoff to an extension officer.
At 6:18 one morning, Kofi, an illustrative cocoa farmer in the Ashanti Region, turned a young green pod in his hand and saw dark marks near its stem. He had planned to clear weeds before the heat rose. Instead, he stood under the tree with his cutlass resting against his boot, trying to decide whether to remove the pod, spray the area, or wait.
Waiting had a cost. If the damage pointed to something spreading through the farm, another day could mean more affected pods. Acting blindly carried a different risk. A product used at the wrong time, in the wrong amount, or without knowing when people could safely return to the field could harm workers, crops, or both.
Kofi did not need a confident guess. He needed a careful first answer in Twi.
A voice question can capture the details that matter
A farmer rarely begins with a disease name. They begin with what they can see: marks that were not there yesterday, a pod turning an unusual colour, leaves changing after rain, insects on one side of the farm.
Those observations are useful, but they have to be heard accurately. When someone is worried about a crop, asking them to turn a field problem into formal written English can add a second problem before the first one has even been understood.
AgriVoice is being prepared for this moment. A farmer can ask a question in Asante Twi by voice. The system is designed to select from reviewed cocoa guidance, return the approved response as speech, and send uncertain or missing cases to a named person. It does not create agronomy instructions from scratch.
That boundary matters. A fluent response can still be wrong. The urgent choice should not force a chemical guess
Kofi’s first impulse was to ask a nearby input seller what to spray. That is a familiar path because it offers an immediate action. Yet a pod symptom alone may not establish the cause, and a chemical recommendation without verified dosage, re-entry guidance, and pre-harvest instructions can turn uncertainty into exposure.
Three AgriVoice chemical guidance blocks are currently withheld for exactly this reason. The system should refuse or escalate those questions until a Ghanaian agronomist approves the missing information.

For Kofi, the turn comes when he records what he sees instead of naming a chemical: the marks are dark, the pod is young, and the affected trees are close together. A reviewed answer may tell him what to observe next, what safe action is supported, or that the case needs an extension officer. Each outcome is more useful than a confident instruction built on an uncertain diagnosis.
Safe advice must include a route to a person
Voice guidance has real promise for agriculture. A cluster-randomized trial found generally positive effects from IVR advice on basic phones, including increased adoption of mulching and integrated pest management. That is encouraging, but it does not remove the need for local review, understandable language, and accountable follow-up.
For the current AgriVoice pilot, a cocoa-sector partner must recruit farmers and name the extension officer who receives escalations. The pilot will test whether questions are answered or correctly escalated, whether farmers understand the spoken response, whether they return to use it again, and whether the escalation queue actually moves.
Those checks are practical. A farmer does not benefit from a response that arrives quickly but cannot be understood. Nor from an escalation that exists on paper while a damaged pod remains in the field.
Later that morning, Kofi keeps the affected pod separate and marks the tree so he can find it again. He has a next observation to make and a person to reach if the answer is uncertain. The work on his farm can continue, but the decision about treatment waits for guidance that has earned his trust.
Build the habit before the next field problem
The useful habit is simple: describe what changed, where it appears, and what has already happened on the farm. Say whether the issue is spreading, whether anyone has already applied a product, and whether people or animals could be exposed.
That gives a voice service, an extension officer, or a farming adviser something concrete to work with. It also makes uncertainty visible early, when the safest response may be to pause, inspect, and escalate.
The marks on Kofi’s pod did not need to become a diagnosis before he spoke. They needed to become a careful question.
