Akosua’s unfinished instruction. A farmer could take the wrong action.

A farming translator should stop when an English instruction leaves room for a different action in spoken Asante Twi. In cocoa advice, a fluent sentence can still be unsafe if a farmer could hear it as permission to spray, mix, enter a field, or treat a plant in a way the reviewed source did not intend.

At 4:40 p.m., Akosua, an illustrative composite translator in Kumasi, paused over a short paragraph on her laptop. A rainstorm had started against the window, and her mug had gone cold beside a notebook full of cocoa terms. The English block told a farmer to “use the product on the affected area” after noticing a problem in the farm.

She had translated the first lines easily. Then she reached that phrase.

Which product? Applied how? To which part of the tree? Spoken aloud, a broad instruction could send someone toward a sprayer, a cut stem, or a patch of soil. The worst ending was plain: a farmer could act on an instruction that sounded complete, while the missing detail changed the farming action entirely.

Akosua left the sentence unfinished.

A completed translation can hide an incomplete instruction

Translation is often treated as a final formatting step. For AgriVoice, it is part of the safety review.

The system is being prepared to give Asante-Twi-speaking cocoa farmers reviewed answers by voice. Its language model selects from approved content blocks. It does not create agronomy advice on its own. That boundary matters only if each selected block can be spoken clearly and faithfully.

A translator may understand the English perfectly and still see a problem the English leaves unresolved. “Use the product” can sound harmless in a document where the reader has context from nearby pages, an agronomist, or a product label. A farmer listening to one voice response may have none of those things in front of them.

The right translation is sometimes no translation yet.

That does not mean inventing a safer sentence. It means marking a query and returning it to the person responsible for the underlying advice. The English source remains visible and unchanged. The uncertainty stays attached to the block until a farming-aware reviewer resolves it.

Spoken language makes ambiguity more urgent

Written instructions let people reread. Voice advice moves past once, often while someone is standing outside with a tool, a bottle, or a crop problem already in front of them.

Akosua imagined the next step after her unfinished line. A farmer hears a familiar English product term inside an Asante Twi response. The voice sounds calm. The instruction sounds authoritative. A vague verb becomes a decision.

That is why translation for farming content needs more than grammar. The translator has to ask whether the sentence is speakable, whether farmers use a particular English term in practice, and whether the wording preserves the limits of the reviewed advice. If it does not, polish can make the problem worse by making an uncertain instruction sound certain.

The same standard applies to chemical guidance. AgriVoice currently withholds blocks that lack verified dosage, re-entry, or pre-harvest details. A translator’s query is useful product evidence

The next morning, Akosua returned to the block and marked it for review rather than forcing a smooth sentence. Her note identified the exact point of uncertainty: the instruction named an action without defining the method, target, or conditions.

That note is useful evidence. It tells the content team where the source advice fails a spoken-language test. It also gives an agronomist a specific decision to make, rather than asking for a broad approval of a paragraph.

For the AgriVoice pilot, approved blocks need spoken Asante Twi reviewed by a translator who understands farming vocabulary. The job includes preserving terms farmers actually use, flagging advice that may be wrong or incomplete, and making each response work when heard aloud. A machine translation can produce fluent text while silently changing a domain noun. In an earlier check, the Twi word for cocoa came back as “chicken.” Fluency offered no protection.

The unfinished sentence is therefore a success condition, not a delay. It shows that the review process caught a place where language could have changed an action.

Build a path from uncertainty to a human answer

A safe voice workflow needs a clear destination for questions that cannot be answered from reviewed content. AgriVoice is designed to escalate missing or uncertain answers to a named extension officer, rather than filling the gap with a confident guess.

That also changes how translators work. They do not need to carry agronomic responsibility alone. Their role is to surface ambiguity early, preserve it accurately, and ensure the spoken version does not outrun the evidence behind it.

Akosua’s notebook stayed open beside the queried block. The sentence was still incomplete, but the risk was visible now. No farmer would hear it as finished until the farming action behind it was clear enough to say aloud.
