When the part will not fit

In 1970, Apollo 13 carried a carbon-dioxide problem that had no ready-made fix. The lunar module had square lithium-hydroxide canisters; the command module had round ones. With the crew in danger, NASA engineers had to make the available parts work together. NASA’s account of the mission documents the improvised adapter that let the crew use the command module canisters in the lunar module.

The important detail is the mismatch. The canisters worked. The spacecraft worked. But the connection between them did not.

A pesticide voice note can fail in the same narrow, consequential space between two things that each appear familiar. A farmer may speak clear Asante Twi, then use the English trade name printed on a container. The speech system may recognize most of the message. The reviewed content may include general guidance about pest pressure. Yet AgriVoice may still lack a safe match for that product name, formulation, or instruction.

That gap is where the system must stop.

A plausible voice note, and the safe response

Imagine a cocoa farmer recording a voice note after seeing damage in a plot. The Twi is understandable. In the middle, the farmer names a pesticide in English, perhaps as it is written on the bottle. They ask whether to spray now and how much to use.

AgriVoice should not convert a near-match into an answer. Similar product names can refer to different active ingredients or concentrations. Even when the product is correctly recognized, a safe response may still depend on details the system does not have, including the label instructions and the conditions of use.

The right response is plain: confirm that the product name or safety details could not be matched, tell the farmer not to mix or spray from the app’s answer, and send the question to the named extension officer. The escalation should preserve the original voice note and the transcript so the person reviewing it can hear the English span in context.

This is why a human escalation path is part of the product, rather than a fallback added after launch. AgriVoice is designed to select reviewed answer blocks, not invent agronomy. Mixed-language speech needs its own test cases

Code-switching is normal in Ghanaian speech. A farmer may use Twi for the problem, English for the product, and a local pronunciation for both. Treating that as an edge case would produce a pilot that succeeds on clean examples and fails when people speak naturally.

The Ghana NLP Community’s Piper/VITS model card offers a useful warning. Its model supports Twi and mixed Twi-English speech, yet reports weaker measured performance on English spans than on pure Twi. A system can sound capable in a mixed-language demo while still losing the one word that determines whether advice is safe.

The pilot therefore needs voice notes that deliberately test these boundaries:

  • A clear Twi question with a known English pesticide name.
  • A product name pronounced unclearly or partly obscured by background noise.
  • Two similar product names in one message.
  • A question where the product is known but the dosage or timing remains unverified.
  • A message that should be escalated because the product cannot be safely identified.

Each case should have a reviewed expected outcome: select an approved block, ask for clarification, or escalate. The score is not merely whether the transcription looks tidy. It is whether the farmer receives a safe answer or a correct handoff.

The handoff has to feel like an answer

A transfer that disappears into an unowned queue fails the farmer in a different way. Before a two-week AgriVoice pilot begins, the cocoa-sector partner needs to name the extension officer who receives escalations and owns the response. The pilot scorecard sets a practical target: a median escalation response in less than one working day.

That ownership changes the message AgriVoice can give. Instead of a vague refusal, it can say that the product could not be safely matched and that the question has been passed to the extension officer. It can also tell the farmer what to keep nearby: the container or label, the crop stage, and any details the reviewer needs to identify the product safely.

Apollo 13’s adapter did not make the square canister round. It created a controlled connection between incompatible parts. AgriVoice should do the equivalent when a Twi voice note crosses into an uncertain English pesticide name: preserve the question, avoid the dangerous shortcut, and connect the farmer to the person who can verify the answer.
