A pesticide name alone cannot support safe advice when the farmer does not say whether the container’s seal is intact. In AgriVoice, that missing fact should trigger a handoff to the named extension officer, not an assumption that the product is safe to use.
The part that did not fit
In April 1970, Apollo 13 was far from Earth when carbon dioxide began building up inside the lunar module. The crew had lithium hydroxide canisters that could remove it, but the command module’s spare canisters were square and the lunar module used round openings.
That physical mismatch mattered. A working filter was close by, yet it could not do its job until Mission Control in Houston found a way to connect it safely. NASA’s Apollo 13 Flight Journal documents the improvised adapter procedure using materials already on board, including plastic bags, cardboard, and duct tape. The crew used the adapted canisters and returned safely to Earth on April 17, 1970.
The crisis was not solved by treating the square canister as though it already fit. The team stopped, identified the mismatch, and worked from what they could verify.
A pesticide container with an unknown seal has the same shape of problem. The farmer may know the product name. They may describe the crop problem clearly. Yet a broken, missing, or previously opened seal changes what a safe next step could be.
A product name leaves out the condition that matters
A voice question can sound complete while omitting the fact that changes the answer.
“Can I use this pesticide on my cocoa?” may leave several safety questions unanswered: Is the label readable? Is the product within date? Has the cap seal already been broken? Was the container stored correctly? Does the farmer know the dosage and the time before it is safe to re-enter the field?
AgriVoice is designed to select reviewed guidance rather than invent agronomy advice. That boundary matters most when a question includes an uncertainty the system cannot safely resolve from a voice note.
The cap seal is easy to miss because it is a small physical detail. It can also be the detail that tells an extension officer to inspect the container, confirm the product, or advise the farmer to avoid using it. A fluent answer that assumes the container is intact would sound helpful while skipping the reason for caution.

Escalation needs a real person at the other end
For the AgriVoice pilot, a cocoa-sector partner must name the extension officer who receives escalations before farmers are exposed to the service. That requirement turns “ask an expert” from a vague fallback into an accountable route.
When the seal status is unknown, AgriVoice should make the uncertainty visible in the escalation. The officer needs the farmer’s question, the named product if it was understood, and the missing detail: the system could not confirm whether the seal was intact.
That gives the officer a practical starting point. They can ask for a photo, request the label details, inspect the container through the appropriate local process, or tell the farmer what to do before spraying. The system should not fill the gap with a confident sentence.
The pilot scorecard also treats escalation as an operational measure. A named owner and a response within one working day are part of whether the workflow is useful. A queue with no accountable person is only a record of unanswered uncertainty.
Build for the detail people forget to mention
Smallholder farmers in Ghana already use mobile phones as a channel for agricultural information, though a 2025 study of farmers in Sekyere South also highlights obstacles that technology-based extension services must address. Voice access can make it easier to ask a question in Asante Twi. It does not make incomplete information complete.
That is why the safest flow has two outcomes: deliver a reviewed answer when the facts support one, or hand the case to a person when they do not. The second outcome is a successful answer when it prevents unsafe action.
Apollo 13’s engineers did not discard the square canister because it was unusable. They identified the exact condition preventing its use and built a verified path around it. For a pesticide question, the unknown seal is that condition. Capture it, pass it on, and let the extension officer decide what the farmer can safely do next.
