Language determines whether guidance can be used

Agricultural support often arrives in formats built for administration: a meeting, a printed notice, a document, or a message dense with technical terms. Those formats can be valuable. They also leave a gap when the farmer needs to ask a question in the words they use at home and hear an answer they can follow while standing in the field.

Asante Twi matters here because comprehension is part of safety. A farmer who can repeat advice back in their own language is in a stronger position to spot what they do not understand. A farmer who hears an unfamiliar instruction may nod, then fill the missing pieces with a neighbour’s recommendation, an old habit, or a rumour.

That is why speakability matters as much as translation. Advice designed for reading can sound awkward or unclear when spoken aloud. It needs short sentences, familiar farming vocabulary, and room for the farmer’s actual question. Where farmers use an English term such as “fungicide” or “COCOBOD,” forcing an unfamiliar substitute can make the guidance harder to recognize, not easier.

The stakes become sharper with chemicals. A product name alone does not tell someone the right dosage, when workers may re-enter a sprayed field, or how close to harvest it may be used. A voice question needs a safe route to an answer

For Abena, the useful institutional response would begin with a simple exchange in Asante Twi: describe the marks, say where they appear, and hear a reviewed next step. If the question matches approved crop guidance, the answer can be delivered clearly by voice. If it involves uncertain symptoms, chemicals, or information outside the reviewed material, the system should say so plainly and pass the question to a named extension officer.

That route changes the moment in the field. Abena does not receive an invented diagnosis. She hears that the chemical instruction cannot yet be confirmed, and her question is sent to the person responsible for follow-up. The uncertainty remains for a while, because it is real. But it is now visible, owned, and moving toward someone qualified to resolve it.

Later that day, she can explain to her sister why she did not spray immediately: the dosage and safety interval had not been confirmed. That is a more useful outcome than an answer that merely sounded complete.

Institutions can make support usable before they scale it

A two-week pilot with 20 to 50 farmers can answer practical questions that a policy document cannot. Do farmers understand the spoken response? Do they return with another question? Are uncertain cases reaching the named extension officer quickly enough? Does the voice feel acceptable in a real farming conversation? Does any response create a safety concern?

Those questions should be measured before wider rollout. A response that reaches a farmer quickly but gives unsafe chemical guidance has failed. A polished demonstration without an accountable person for escalations has also failed.

The first work is therefore institutional as much as technical: recruit a cocoa-sector partner, name the extension officer who owns escalations, have farming-aware translators review spoken Asante Twi, and obtain agronomist clearance for chemical guidance. Only then can voice support help turn protection into a decision a farmer can make safely, in the language they understand.
