A sensitization visit often creates the next wave of work

A campaign visit can make farmers more likely to ask for help. That is a good outcome, but it creates pressure on the officer whose number becomes the follow-up channel.

Some questions repeat. Farmers may need the same advice again when they are back on the farm, looking at a pod, a leaf, or a product label. Others arrive as voice notes at times when an officer is travelling, meeting another group, or dealing with an urgent field case.

A Twi voice workflow could hold a small set of reviewed answers from the campaign: practical, spoken explanations of topics the institution has already approved. A farmer asks a question in Asante Twi. The system identifies the relevant reviewed block and plays it back in Twi. The advice stays within the boundaries set by the institution.

That matters because the fastest response is not always the safest one. Questions that are unclear, outside the content pack, affected by poor audio, or related to pesticide dosage and re-entry intervals should be escalated. The farmer should know that the question has been passed on, and the institution should know who owns the queue.

This is especially important for chemical guidance. A farmer who asks whether it is safe to re-enter a sprayed field needs an answer tied to the product, dosage, timing, and local guidance. If any of those details are missing, the right response is to withhold instruction and send the question to the named extension officer or agronomist. The strongest first content pack will come from field officers, not a generic agriculture database. For a small pilot, the institution can begin with a narrow set of reviewed blocks and measure what happens. Did farmers understand the Twi response? Did the workflow answer or correctly escalate the question? Did people ask again in the second week? How quickly did a named officer resolve escalations?

Those measures matter more than a large feature list. A reply that reaches a farmer quickly but gives unreviewed pesticide instruction is a failure. A system that escalates every question is also a poor use of the officer’s time. The practical target is a reliable division of work: common questions answered from reviewed material, difficult questions reaching a person with enough context to act.

Build the support line around institutional accountability

Apollo 13’s improvised adapter worked because the people on the ground understood the equipment, the limits, and the consequences of a bad instruction. The same discipline applies here. An institution needs to approve the spoken Twi content, name the escalation owner, test the full path with real farmer questions, and keep unsafe topics held back until an agronomist clears them.

A sensitization campaign can then continue after the gathering ends. Farmers can ask when the question occurs, hear approved guidance in Twi, and reach a responsible person when the situation calls for judgment. The field officer remains central to the work, with a better way to focus attention where it is needed most.
