When a farmer asks for pesticide dosage, re-entry timing, or harvest timing that has not been verified, the responsible answer is to pause and escalate it to a qualified agronomist. A practical session should show that process clearly, because a confident guess can put a crop and family at risk.
In April 1970, Apollo 13’s crew faced a growing carbon dioxide problem while travelling in space. The lunar module had square filters, while the command module used round ones. NASA engineers in Houston had to work with materials already aboard the spacecraft and devise an adapter before the crew could use it. The outcome was uncertain while the problem was still active.
NASA’s Apollo 13 Flight Journal documents how the ground team developed and communicated the solution for Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. The lesson is not that every field question needs a spacecraft-scale response. It is that a high-stakes answer must fit the real constraints before anyone relies on it.
The question that changes the session
A farmer may ask a question that sounds simple: “How much should I use?” Or: “Can I enter the farm tomorrow?” Or: “We harvest on Friday. Is it safe to spray now?”
Those are not small follow-up questions. They depend on the exact product, label instructions, crop condition, application method, weather, and the required re-entry and pre-harvest intervals. A facilitator who fills the silence with a remembered dose may sound helpful while giving advice that does not apply.
That is where a good training session changes direction. The facilitator names what is missing, records the product and question, and sends it to the named extension officer or agronomist. The farmer leaves with a safe next step: keep the bottle closed until the verified guidance comes back.

A pause can be the useful part of a demonstration
People often judge a demonstration by how quickly every question receives an answer. That standard is dangerous around pesticides.
The stronger demonstration is concrete. A facilitator can say: “This question needs the product label and an agronomist’s review. Here is who will receive it. Here is what we will record. Here is when we will follow up.” Farmers can see that the route works, rather than being asked to trust a vague promise.
That approach also makes the limits visible before the pilot begins. Build the escalation before inviting questions
An escalation path needs more than a phone number in a facilitator’s notebook. Before a farmer session, the partner should identify the extension officer who receives questions, agree on what details they need, and set an expected response process.
For a pesticide question, record the crop, visible problem, product name, timing of the planned application, and planned harvest or field-entry activity. Do not turn missing details into assumptions. A photo of the product label may help the reviewer, but it does not replace their judgment.
Then test the handoff. Send a sample question through the actual channel. Confirm that the responsible person receives it, understands what is being asked, and can return a response a farmer can act on. The answer must fit the situation
Apollo 13’s engineers could not send a generic instruction to the crew. The proposed adapter had to work with the equipment and materials actually available in the spacecraft. A pesticide answer has the same requirement for fit: it must match the actual product, crop, timing, and safety instructions.
That is the standard worth demonstrating in a cocoa training session. When a farmer raises the question that the facilitator cannot safely answer, stop the explanation. Capture the facts. Escalate to the person who can verify them. Return with guidance that fits the farm in front of you.
