A spreading brown mark on a cocoa pod can need a human diagnosis when two diseases look similar and the safe response depends on what is actually happening in the field. A voice service should recognize that uncertainty, avoid naming a treatment with false confidence, and send the farmer’s question to a qualified extension officer.
At 6:40 one morning, Esi stood beneath a cocoa tree near Sefwi Wiawso with her phone held close to a pod. The previous afternoon she had noticed one dark patch. Now several pods had marks that seemed to be widening after the rain.
She recorded a Twi voice note: the marks were brown, the pods were still hanging, and she wanted to know what to spray before the problem reached the next row.
The risk was not simply losing a few pods. If the marks signaled a disease moving through the farm, waiting for a confident-sounding but wrong answer could put part of the season’s harvest at risk. If she chose a chemical without knowing the diagnosis, dosage, or safety interval, she could also expose herself and anyone returning to the field too soon.
A brown patch does not identify itself
A pod mark can look obvious from a distance. That is where trouble starts.
Two cocoa diseases can present in ways a farmer may reasonably describe with the same words: a brown patch, a dark spot, pods changing after rain. A voice note adds another layer of uncertainty. The recording may include wind, roadside traffic, code-switched words, or a detail that is hard for speech recognition to catch.
AgriVoice is being built for this exact boundary. It can help capture the farmer’s question in Twi and match clear cases to reviewed guidance. It should not turn an ambiguous description into an authoritative diagnosis.
That distinction matters because a quick spray can feel like action while creating a second problem. The product named at the shop may be unclear. The right dosage may be absent. Re-entry and pre-harvest intervals may not be known. The useful answer is sometimes an escalation
Esi’s voice note should receive a careful response in spoken Asante Twi: the description alone cannot safely distinguish the likely causes; do not apply a product based only on this message; an extension officer needs to review the case.
That response needs to do more than say “ask an expert.” It must make the next step real.
For the planned AgriVoice pilot, a cocoa-sector partner must name the extension officer responsible for escalations before farmers are exposed to the service. The pilot also measures whether that person can respond in less than one working day. Without a named owner, an escalation becomes a polite dead end.
A useful escalation can preserve the details Esi has already given: where the mark is on the pod, whether it is spreading, what changed after rain, and whether nearby pods show the same signs. The officer can then ask for the missing observation, request a photo or visit where available, and decide what guidance is appropriate.
This is a more honest use of voice AI. The system helps a farmer make the question clear and routes uncertainty quickly. Agronomy advice remains reviewed content or the responsibility of a qualified person.
Why Twi changes the quality of the question
A farmer should be able to describe a crop problem in the language that comes naturally in the field. That does not mean every Twi phrase maps cleanly to a safe answer.
Neuralis has already seen why language handling needs caution. In an earlier translation test, the Twi word for cocoa was returned as “chicken.” Fluent output can still be dangerously wrong when the domain noun has changed. That is why machine translation cannot be treated as a final authority for spoken cocoa guidance.
The current AgriVoice approach keeps the model inside a narrower role. It selects from reviewed answer blocks rather than writing agronomy advice from scratch. Questions that are missing key facts, fall outside approved content, or raise pesticide risk should escalate.
Before the pilot, the approved blocks must be translated into spoken Asante Twi by a farming-aware translator. Three chemical blocks remain withheld until a Ghanaian agronomist verifies dosage, re-entry, and pre-harvest guidance. Those held answers are a safety control, not an unfinished convenience.
The morning after the voice note
For Esi, the immediate win is not a bottle recommendation sent in seconds. It is knowing that the brown patch has been taken seriously before she spends money, sprays blindly, or watches the marks move further through the farm.
Later that day, she can listen again to the Twi response beside the affected tree and prepare the observations the extension officer needs. The next conversation starts with the right uncertainty already named.
That is the standard worth testing in a 20 to 50 farmer pilot: answers should be useful when the evidence is clear, and escalations should work when it is not. A safe system earns trust by refusing to pretend that every brown mark has one obvious name.
