A farming-aware translator can prevent unsafe cocoa advice by stopping when a disease term is unclear, querying the approved English source, and refusing to turn uncertainty into spoken Twi. That pause matters because AgriVoice is designed to select reviewed answers, with unclear or missing guidance routed for human review instead of guessed.

At 4:40 p.m., Akosua, an illustrative composite, had one window open to the English source and another to the Twi translation worksheet. Her tea had gone cold beside the keyboard. She was translating a block about marks and swelling on cocoa trees when she reached a disease term that could shape every sentence after it.

The English wording looked settled. The Twi phrase did not.

If she chose a familiar-sounding term without checking, a farmer could hear an answer about the wrong problem, delay asking an extension officer for help, or take action that did not fit what was happening in the farm. The phrase was close enough to pass a quick read. That was the danger.

Akosua marked the block “Query” and wrote what she needed clarified. The phrase would not enter the approved spoken-answer pack that day.

A fluent translation can still carry the wrong meaning

A farmer does not need an elegant sentence. They need a sentence that names the right problem and gives safe next steps in language they can follow.

Cocoa advice contains terms that sit close together in ordinary conversation but lead to different actions. A term for a pod mark, a tree swelling, a pest, or a chemical product can carry the weight of the whole answer. Translation software can produce smooth wording while changing a domain noun. Neuralis has already seen “kokoo,” meaning cocoa, return as “chicken” during a translation test. The output was readable. It was also wrong.

That is why AgriVoice does not treat translation as a finishing step. The English source is reviewed content, and the Twi version must preserve its meaning in speech. When a translator finds a phrase that feels uncertain, they can query the source rather than quietly making the best available guess.

The query creates a useful stop point. It tells the team that the problem may be the English wording, the missing agricultural context, or the Twi term itself. Each possibility needs a different response. A farming-aware translator can identify the ambiguity. An agronomist can confirm the technical meaning. The safest answer sometimes waits

Akosua did not replace the uncertain term with a broad instruction such as “treat the disease.” That would have made the block sound complete while hiding the unresolved question.

Instead, the block stayed out of the completed export. The farmer-facing system should only speak translated content marked done. A queried block remains visible to the people responsible for resolving it, rather than becoming an invisible risk inside a long list of approved paragraphs.

The same standard applies earlier in the process. If a disease term cannot be rendered with confidence, the translation is incomplete. A system that speaks quickly with an uncertain phrase has created a more serious problem than a system that asks for review.

Review belongs where the meaning can still change

AgriVoice is preparing a two-week pilot with 20 to 50 Asante-Twi-speaking cocoa farmers and a cocoa-sector partner. Before farmer exposure, the reviewed content blocks need spoken Asante Twi from a translator who understands farming vocabulary. The partner must also name an extension officer to receive escalations.

Those roles are connected. The translator protects meaning before an answer is released. The agronomist clears technical guidance that needs specialist verification. The extension officer takes questions that cannot safely be answered from the reviewed content.

That division keeps the language model in a narrow role: it selects an approved answer block or an escalation path. It does not write agronomy advice. A stronger speech-recognition model can help capture a farmer’s question, especially as language coverage expands, but recognition alone cannot confirm that a disease term, product name, or safety instruction has the intended meaning.

Later that evening, Akosua returned to the queried block. The unresolved phrase was still there, highlighted instead of buried in a polished paragraph. That is a small, concrete record of restraint. Once the clarification arrives, she can translate the term with the right context and mark the block ready for speech. Until then, the farmer hears no false certainty.
